Let’s Get Started with BuddyBoss: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide – Part 2

BuddyBoss can be overwhelming to configure. This is especially true if it's your first time using it. This is part 2 of a series for first time BuddyBoss users explaining how you can configure its features to get the the results you want. Visit part 1 of the series before viewing this one will help you best understand what I'm coverning here.

Let's Simpify the BuddyBoss Right Hand Dropdown Menu

One key step in configuring BuddyBoss is to activate only the components you need. By default, BuddyBoss will turn on all the components so it shows all possible menus. This is great for BuddyBoss to illustrate all the great features they offer, but it's a major overkill for your site. Turning on all the components will add 38 menu items to the default right dropdown menu. Even if you do activate all components, this menu is too much.

In the video, I explain how to simplify this.

Let's Remove Member-to-Member Communication

In part 1 of this series, I show which components make up this feature. Some site builders don't need this. The video covers how to remove these and what affect they have on the menus and feature they provide.

Installing BuddyBoss

Let's say you have a brand new Wordpress site installed. Installing BuddyBoss is straightforward. It's a lot simpler now than it used to be. BuddyBoss is made up for four items. They are:

  1. BuddyBoss Theme
  2. BuddyBoss Child Theme
  3. BuddyBoss Platform
  4. BuddyBoss Platform Pro

You can download these by visiting your BuddyBoss portal, logging in and downloading these four.

You install them as you would any Wordpress themes and plugins. Start by installing the two themes. Activate the BuddyBoss Child Theme. It will will make use of the BuddyBoss Theme as it's parent theme. (There are good reasons for having two themes, but that is outside of the scope of this lesson.)

What you will have now is a BuddyBoss site with no pages or data to see how the site working like the Sandbox site. To add some data and some pages to work with, log into your site and visit BuddyBoss->Tools in your Wordpress administration area. There you can import the parts of the site you want given your requirements. Selecting this will add data and create some pages for you. also create pages for your site for the News Feed, Groups, Members and several others.

You will not have the menus configured to access them. You will have the overpopulated right dropdown menu. In the video I show how to disable that.

From here, you can begin to work on your site.
