GDPR Made Kind of Easy – What the Big Boys Are Doing?

The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (or GDPR for short) went into effect May 25, 2018.  I thought the timing was right for publishing a blog with a review of what I've seen several large international companies do on their websites in their effort to comply.  This is by no means legal advice.  I am not a lawyer.  It does show what these larger companies so we can learn from them.

What I don’t cover in my video are two things.  One is what you have likely experienced if you visit or are registered to receive information from with sites that have European visitors.  They should have sent you emails from them asking you to review and approve their privacy policies.  That is their attempt to get you to agree to their privacy and cookie policies.  That would enable them to continue emailing you and comply with the requirements of the law.

Finally, you'll be seeing more and more forms on websites asking you to comply with their privacy and cookie policy right there when you opt-in, complete their contact us form or make a purchase.  Some forms will require that you click on a checkbox stating you overtly agree.  I've seen others include a statement above the submit button saying, “By submitting this form, you agree to our privacy and cookie policy…”  These would provide links to both policies so you can easily review them before hitting that submit button.
