Level Up Your Business

I wish I had known this when I first launched my business. It would have saved me so much grief and frustration.

Back in 2010, I  worked a corporate job. I made a decent living. I had a little side gig working with small business owners on their marketing. Given my programmer background, the tech work was easy. I could always "figure it out" and deliver on what the customer wanted. Customer satisfaction was good.

What I noticed is my sales and income were unpredictable.

That's no fun.

Many of us entrepreneurs start off doing something because we're good at it. I was good at building websites, working social media and content marketing. I know lawyers and accountants that are just as good at what they do. A friend of mine is a master woodworker excellent at building custom doors, door frames and furniture.

What I learned slowly a few years into my business was that this special talent of mine, the talent that enabled me to first launch my business, had become my weakest link.  The very thing that got me started was now the boat anchor keeping me from growing.

Here's why.

The key to EVERY business is sales. If sales are strong, everything else works itself out.

My sales were...OK, not great. What I realized was that my sales skills were poor. Of course they were. I was a programmer. I ran IT departments. I had never been in a successful sales job.

I could get leads, but I needed to make sure I would never lose a sales for lack of sales skills. I discovered a local Sandler Training center and I signed up for their sales training program. This was a huge investment of time and money for me, but I knew it was a critical skill I needed for my business. The program made a HUGE difference.  I saw that sales, like my technical disciplines, has a process and best practices. Over a two years period, I got good at it.

I could share with you all I learned, but that would take forever. What's important is I mentally shifted my thinking. Instead of seeing myself as an technical expert that delivered services, I began to see myself as a salesperson.

Here is how I can best describe my transformation. If I could sell a million online course deals or if my work worker friend could sell a million custom furniture deals, couldn't we find a way to get those delivered by someone else. I can hire people to do the work or outsource the work to someone else. That might not be how we want to run your businesses, but this different way of thinking about my business ,as if I had nothing to do with delivering the services, made me a better business owner.

My vision is to have a business that's more than a just job. I want something that can run without me being there. I want to have a business that allows me to go on vacation without having to worry about everything. This is a key first step, the perfecting of my sales skills.

I wish I had realized this much earlier. It would have sped up by ride to where I am today.

Hope this helps.
